Comparing the parties’ climate change platforms

In an election year, how well do the federal party climate plans stack up against each other and which ones will reach the Paris targets? I worked with leading energy policy firm Navius Research to project the impact of each party’s climate change policies.

We provided the only modeling analysis of all the party climate platforms in the 2019 federal election, helping Canadians make an informed choice at the polls. Our analysis and the use of Navius's well-known gTech model earned us kudos from economists and became an important 'fact check' for the parties.

Fatal police encounters continue to rise in Canada

I analyzed CBC’s Deadly Force database, which tracks police encounters that led to deaths from 2000 to 2020. The database was put together by CBC researchers from publicly available sources such as media releases, coroner’s reports and official investigations.

My analysis shows that Black and Indigenous people continue to be disproportionately represented amongst the victims compared to their share of the overall population. About two-thirds of people killed in police encounters suffered from mental health or substance abuse issues.

This story was a finalist in the 2021 RTDNA national awards in the data storytelling category.

Solving the methane problem

Methane emissions from Canada’s oil and gas sector are likely much higher than the official estimates, according to multiple studies in the past few years. In this story for CBC’s The National, I looked at what researchers are doing to measure methane more accurately, and help keep this potent greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere.
